Best time to bareboat charter in the Whitsundays

Whilst most of Australia feels the stark reality of each passing season, the Whitsundays enjoys some of the finest weather year-round!

The majority of the time, you will find the locals and visitors swimming in the ocean, basking in the sun, sailing the seas, exploring the wilderness off the beaten track.

Whitsunday Escape is perfectly placed within the tropics and are blessed with average daytime temperatures between 23o to 30oC.

Best Time to Charter

Hiring a bareboat and cruising the Whitsunday Islands is an adventure that can be enjoyed any time of the year. Located in the trade wind belt, the islands enjoy light to moderate winds year-round. The winds generally blow from the south-east in the winter and in the summer, you have a mix of south-east or north-east winds.

Mid-April to mid-December is traditionally the safest time to book a holiday for the best Whitsunday weather. Keep in mind that every year can be different.

To make the most of your bareboat holiday in the Whitsundays, there are certain seasons or months which may be better suited to your holiday needs.

April to June is our shoulder season where the humidity and heat lessens. Days are often bright and clear and the temperatures pleasant and the islands green.
A truly perfect time to experience bareboating in the Whitsundays!

July and August are why the Whitsundays is known as a sailing “Mecca”.
Sailors and visitors come from afar to enjoy both Airlie Beach Race Week and the Hamilton Island Race Week and the daily on land festivities (August).
This time of year is also perfect for spotting the majestic humpback whales up close, as they migrate through the Whitsundays to birth their young.

September and October is the peak season in the Whitsundays. The skies are typically clear, there are light winds to set your sails to and plenty of sunshine.
These months book out FAST!

November to December is a perfect time to beat the school holiday visitors. Often we will experience a change in the winds to be more northerly.
Enjoy the warm weather and explore anchorages that are not usually accessible during our South Easterly trade winds.

January to March is the traditional wet season and a great time to secure a bargain holiday if you’re willing to take a small gamble on the weather!
Expect regular showers and it will be hot and humid on the shore and when out of the wind. Gushing waterfalls, swimming holes and seldom visited south facing bays are ready to be explored on the islands. All Whitsunday Escape boats are fitted with air-conditioning with berthed out of the wind at the Coral Sea Marina or Hamilton Island Marina.

Top Tips

  • Make the most of the season specials to ensure you get the best bang for your buck!
  • Plan ahead – peak periods book quickly! If you have set dates you want to travel, start enquiring a year or more in advance.
  • Kids no longer in school?  Avoid the school holidays, enjoy escaping the crowds and appreciate the shoulder specials.
  • Leave yourself time to unwind- a 5-night bareboat holiday does not leave much time to relax and explore those hidden gems.
Make the most of your hard-earned holiday with a 7-night, 10-night or an even longer bareboat charter (there is so much to see and do!).
