Boating on the Great Barrier Reef

When anchoring, it is important that your boat has protection from waves and winds. Whitsunday Escape boats are restricted to visiting the anchorages that surround the Whitsunday Islands and coast.

Coral reef surrounds all the Whitsunday Islands and much of the Whitsunday coast.  The reefs may extend a few metres to a few kilometres from the shore. Large reef areas no different from the outer reef are located at:

  • Langford Island
  • Black Island
  • Hayman Island
  • Saba Bay
  • Hazelwood Island

Most of these reefs have been protected from fishing for over 20 years ensuring the fish and wildlife is pristine.

Around the Whitsunday Islands, like the outer reef, live coral grows from a depth 20 metres up to the surface at low tide. For that reason prudent navigation is a necessity.
