Olympic sailing medals for Australia
Australia has won two medals in the Olympics in Rio for sailing, a gold medal and a silver medal. Congratulations to our newest medalists!
Cousins from Sydney, Lisa Darmanin and Jason Waterhouse, came within an inch of winning a sailing gold medal, after one win and two disastrous heats. They finished one point behind the gold medal-winning sailors from Argentina after going into the sailing final in 4th position.

Tom Burton earlier today won a gold medal for sailing in the Laser class. It is Australia’s first gold medal in sailing at the Rio Olympic Games.
His main rival, from Croatia, was 10 points ahead, at the start of the sailing race which was worth double points. Burton pulled a move on the start line to force the Croatian sailor to take a penalty turn, giving the Aussie sailor the head start. Burton only needed to finish in third place to take the gold medal.
Australia also won gold in the laser sailing class in London 2012, with Tom Slingsby taking home the gold medal.
