The Ultimate Queensland Road Trip and a week on the water

Are you travelling through Queensland this year? Queensland has some of the most beautiful sights to see along the coastal and inland roads. You’ll be amazed at the diversity. From beaches, to rum, to waterfalls, to whales… Queensland has it all.

You can see dinosaur fossils in the outback, find an abandoned Spanish castle in the rainforest, and meet turtles, kangaroos, platypus and more in their natural habitats.

For some road trip inspiration, check out the Ultimate Guide to Driving the Great Barrier Reef below.

Whether you only spend a week and stay in hotels, or take 6 months and your own caravan, you’ll find an amazing variety of iconic Australian road trip experiences listed in the guide.

There are activities for families with kids, couples looking for romance, and grey nomads on the ‘big lap’ looking to tick off everything on the bucket list.

Stop in the Whitsundays for the experience of a lifetime

When in the Whitsundays, the highlight of any road trip is actually to get off the road!

Enjoy a week cruising the Whitsunday Islands by bareboat, and seeing the beautiful islands and coastline from a different perspective. A Whitsunday Escape bareboat holiday is perfectly suited to families, couples, and explorers, no matter your age.

A bareboat is a lot like a caravan, sometimes better equipped and more luxurious. It is fully self-contained, with bedrooms and bathrooms (as many as four of each!), a kitchen with all the gadgets and utensils, a BBQ, fresh hot and cold water, and of course all the safety equipment you could possibly need.

What do you need to know?

Our helpful reservations team will help you choose the right boat for your level of experience, even if that level is very low. All you need is some basic boating experience – you don’t need a licence or sailing skills to enjoy a bareboating holiday.

Our experienced briefers will teach you everything you need to know about the boat you have booked. Your briefing covers the operation of the boat itself, safety procedures and equipment, navigation and itinerary planning, and much more. You can also book some extra time with a briefer to give you an even more comprehensive lesson, if your experience is rusty, low, or you are not feeling confident.

What about the caravan?

You can leave your car and caravan parked safely in Airlie Beach, while you take to the water. There are options ranging from open air parking right at the marina, to a fully secure, undercover facility with valet service. If you are staying in a caravan park in Airlie Beach before and after your boating adventure, you can often leave your caravan parked safely at the park too.

When is the best time to go?

The best months to be driving (and boating!) in Queensland are between May and September. The winter months in the tropics aren’t very ‘wintery’ at all. Typical day time temperatures are frequently in the mid 20’s, and it’s warm and dry. We don’t tend to get much winter rain like the southern states of Australia do, meaning roads and walking trails are clear and accessible, and it’s very pleasant to be sitting around your campsite, or on the deck of your boat, enjoying the company and the views.
