Safety in the Whitsundays

The Whitsunday Islands are one of the safest cruising destinations in the world:

  • Protection of Australian law.
  • On water support from the water police.
  • A nearly crime free holiday destination.
  • On water support from an active volunteer marine rescue.
  • A fully equipped air sea rescue medivac helicopter located at Mackay.
  • Emergency VHF frequency channel 16 is monitored 24 hours a day.
  • Accurate weather forecasts in a zone where weather changes are gradual.
  • Medical facilities located on the mainland and Hamilton Island.
  • Resident nurses located on Hayman Island and Daydream Island.

On-water support

The Whitsunday Escape team is extremely knowledgeable and is here to make your escape as pleasurable and hassle free as possible. We provide the following on-water support:

  • Morning and afternoon radio schedules with weather updates and on-water advice.
  • VHF radio support 8 am to 5 pm, 365 days a year.
  • We keep a quick response vessel, a 5.5 m rigid inflatable boat with a 115 hp motor, on standby in case you need assistance.
  • Our charter base at Abell Point Marina is locked at night and is patrolled by security guards.
  • An extensive pre-departure safety briefing.
  • After hours contact numbers.
  • Whitsunday Escape office is available 7 days a week, 8 am to 5 pm.

Mobile Phones

Mobile phone reception is normally available on:

  • West side of Hook Island
  • West side of Whitsunday Island
  • Hamilton Island

If you can’t live without your phone don’t forget your charger. All Whitsunday Escape vessels are fitted with:

  • 12v outlet (12 v is the same as your car charger so bring it along)
  • a small 240 v inverter (which is the same as a standard house power point)

In an emergency use 000 or 112 (selects the best reception provider.)

Internet Access

Internet access around the islands will be patchy and depends on the coverage of your service provider. There are some areas where coverage will be better, and other areas where it is non-existent.

There are a few free hotspots (WIFI) around Airlie Beach:

  • Whitsunday Escape – vicinity of the office
  • Sorrento’s – Abell Point Marina
  • McDonalds – Airlie Beach and Cannonvale
  • Telstra shop – Whitsunday Plaza Shopping Centre
