The Whitsundays become a Whale Heritage Site!

The Whitsundays has been proudly recognised as a Whale Heritage Site by the World Cetacean Alliance, all thanks to the tireless efforts of Whales of the Whitsundays (WoW) and their enthusiastic community program. This prestigious designation highlights the immense importance of our region as a haven for humpback whales, especially as a calving ground.

This remarkable achievement makes the Whitsundays only the second location in Australia to earn such distinction, and notably the first within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. What’s more, it proudly stands as the sole site worldwide nestled within a UNESCO World Heritage Area.

With this official stamp of approval, the Whitsundays proudly joins the ranks of Hervey Bay as one of Australia’s designated Whale Heritage Sites, further cementing its global significance in marine conservation efforts.

Last year we introduced our guests to the exciting opportunity of recording whale sightings, contributing valuable data to the Citizen Science/Eye on the Reef database. This data not only helps researchers understand whale behavior in our area but also aids in educating operators on the importance of Whale protection.

If you’re planning a visit, mid-June to August is your prime window for spotting these majestic creatures. Chartering a boat offers the perfect opportunity to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring experience of observing these whales up close. From breaching to tail slapping, you’re in for a treat during your 2024 Whitsunday Escape!
